Using Q2NM is pretty straight forward. I tried to eliminate the possibilities
for confusion and errors when using this program. Suggestions for improvements
are welcome. It was designed to make use of Vikings fun name modification to
Quake2. If you are not playing a game that uses this modification then your name
will not be composed of the high ascii characters. Not using the fun name will
not effect your game, and vice versa. For a complete list of mods that use the
standard for the fun characters visit my website.

- RivCTF: http://www.d.kth.se/~d94-pen/RivCTF/

Make the name using any of the characters that are displayed. Click File-Save Name
and follow the directions and prompts. Q2NM asks you where Quake2.exe is located
in order to save the funname.cfg file into its proper location.
Now, when launching Quake2 you need to specify "+exec funname.cfg" in the Quake2
command line. If you do not it will not initialize properly and will not load the
fun name. And it MUST be done at startup, not during game play.
I just edited my autoexec.cfg file in my Quake2\baseq2 directory and added the exec
command as the first line, since Viking is a server side mod, and only deals with
the baseq2 directory when playing DM. If you are playing CTF then it would be a
good idea to edit the autoexec.cfg in the CTF directory and add it there.
Either way, it needs to be executed AT startup, not after you are already connected!
Other noteworthy features of the "fun name" standard.
- 1. It reads as normal text on dedicated consoles. Non printable characters are
translated to printable ones.- It does not allow animated names. The "fun name" is set ONCE, when connecting.
- The "fun name" is completely differentiated from the players name. 2 different variables.
- NO high ascii needed.
- No extra bandwidth needed. The "fun names" cannot be changed during play.
- Server operator can toggle it ON or OFF.
- NO characters will hide ping, or hide your name from being displayed (ala Quake).

Quake2 Name Maker is a shareware program. It is not limited in any way, but does
occasionally nag you to register. Registering is only 10 US Dollars and will give
you priority assistance. Registering once registers all of the QNM programs that
are released.
I have an online registration site, so check the website. Send a check or money
order (cash is ok, but hide it in something) (payable to Tony Browneller) in the
amount of 10 US Dollars to:
Tony Browneller
13 Graywood Rd.
Baltimore MD. 21222
Include your real name and email address. Once I have processed the check or
money order you will receive the registration information in your email. I cannot
process the registration if I do not have your name and email address, so be sure
to send that as well.
Shareware is a legitimate program. It is a try before you buy program. If you
find it useful and use it often, it helps to support the author who wrote it. It
encourage them to make it better and continue improving on it. Q2NM does not stop
working, and all of the features are intact and operational. I made it that way
because I hate to install something and uninstall it 10 days later because the
trial period ran out. I really on honest peoples judgement and thus far I am very
encouraged by the response. Thank You.
